Scrub typhus or Japanese river fever was known in Japanese folklore to be associated with the jungle mite or chigger, termed 'tsutsugamushi' in Japanese (tsutsuga = disease, harm, noxious and mushi = bug).
Japanese River Fever has a mortality rate of over 50 per cent so is one of the deadliest diseases in the world.
