The group includes the wide-ranging genus Cyprinodon (~50 species) and five genera of one or two species each: two monotypic, locally endemic genera on the Mexican Plateau (Cualac and Megupsilon); the monotypic Jordanella and Garmanella from Florida and the Yucatan Peninsula, respectively; and Floridichthys, with one species on the Florida coast and one on the Yucatan Peninsula.
These include Jordanella floridae, Garmanella pulchra, and Megupsilon aporus (Uyeno and Miller, 1971; Levin and Foster, 1972) and 17 species representing a wide variety of Cyprinodon (Miller and Echelle, 1975; Miller, 1976; Turner and Liu, 1977; Stevenson, 1981; Nirchio et al., 2003).
It has been shown that some species from the genus Cyprinodon Garmanella Jordanella Megupsilon and Orestias (Fam: Cyprinodontidae) have 2n=48 (Arai 2011).

Megupsilon aporus and its sister group, Cyprinodon, belong to a monophyletic group containing four other genera, Cualac, Jordanella, Floridichthys, and Garmanella (Parenti, 1981; Costa, 1997; Echelle et al., 2005).
