He came to Canada to study for his doctorate at McGill University in September 1958, although he spent his first winter as a meteorological observer at the McGill Sub-Arctic Research Laboratory at Schefferville, central Labrador-Ungava. Here the climate and small staff atmosphere must have appeared not particularly unfamiliar to his experience in Antarctica (in those early days of the Lab we undertook all hourly observations out-of-doors, which even included defrosting the globe on the actinograph before each sunrise with bare hands).
The author arrived at the isolated laboratory with his new bride, along with a handful of other graduate students from McGill University, and their friendships and relationships are interwoven with their work developing research programs in the Labrador-Ungava Subarctic and Arctic region.
Early on reconstructions of the Laurentide Ice Sheet retreat pattern in Labrador-Ungava were to a large extent based on the spatial pattern of glacial meltwater traces (e.g., Ives 1960; Barnett 1963; Barnett and Peterson 1964; Peterson 1965).
