night vision device

Any electro-optical device that is used to detect visible and infrared energy and provide a visible image. Night vision goggles, forward-looking infrared, thermal sights, and low-light level television are night vision devices. Also called NVD. See also forward-looking infrared; night vision goggles(s).

The light intensification version features a 1280 x 1024-pixel sensor with 8[degrees] and 5[degrees] fields of view, and is capable of detecting a soldier at two km, while the thermal imaging version has a 384 x 288-pixel sensor, with 9.4[degrees] and 4.7[degrees] fields of view offering soldier detection capability at a range of over six kilometres.
One is light intensification, the other infrared vision.
The objective of light intensification, as its name implies, is to capture whatever light is available and amplify it.
In total contrast with light intensification, the infrared technique does not try to work from an existing picture, but builds one from the varying temperatures that constitute a scene in very much the same way that a hand can make the difference between hot and cold water.
