El genero Ciconia se encuentra actualmente representado en Sudamerica por una unica especie vulgarmente llamada ciguena americana (Ciconia maguari), la cual presenta una amplia distribucion desde Centroamerica hasta la provincia de Chubut, en Argentina (KAHL, 1971) y posee un registro fosil que se remonta en Sudamerica al Pleistoceno superior (PARDINAS et al,, 1996).
