Those territories with compact Russian majority include, in particular, the vast northern parts of Kazakstan inhabited for 400 years by Russian settlers and Cossacks, and known otherwise as Southern Siberia; the southern and eastern parts of Ukraine, which have historically been known as Malorossia [Little Russia]; and the Crimean Peninsula on the Black Sea, which was handed by Nikita Khruschev (ethnic Ukrainian) in 1954 from the Russian Federation to the Ukrainian SSR in commemoration of the 300th anniversary of reunification of Russia and Ukraine.
