Lu·ther

 (lo͞o′thər), Martin 1483-1546.
German theologian and leader of the Reformation. His opposition to the corruption of the papacy and his belief in salvation through faith alone caused his excommunication from the Catholic Church (1521). His theological writings, reformation of liturgy, and German translation of the Bible (1534) resulted in the establishment of the Lutheran Church.
