n. Abbr. F
The unit of capacitance in the meter-kilogram-second system equal to the capacitance of a capacitor having an equal and opposite charge of 1 coulomb on each plate and a potential difference of 1 volt between the plates. See Table at measurement.
[After Michael Faraday.]
(General Physics) physics the derived SI unit of electric capacitance; the capacitance of a capacitor between the plates of which a potential of 1 volt is created by a charge of 1 coulomb. Symbol: F
[C19: named after Michael Faraday]
far•ad(ˈfær əd, -æd)
the SI unit of capacitance, equal to that of a capacitor having a potential of 1 volt when charged with 1 coulomb of electricity. Symbol: F
[1860–65; after M. Faraday]
A unit used to measure electric capacitance. A capacitor in which a charge of one coulomb can produce a difference of one volt between its two storage plates has a capacitance of one farad.
A unit of capacitance. A conductor has a capacitance of one farad if a charge of one coulomb changes its potential by one volt.
