Cane gave a list of practices and institutions which were linked with the monarchy and had recently been put down by parliament, and gloomily forecast that the theater would have the same fate: "For Monopolers are downe, Projectors are downe, the High Commission Court is downe, the Starre-chamber is downe, & (some think) Bishops will downe, and why should we then that are farre inferior to any of those not justly fear least we should be downe too?" (21) The law courts of High Commission and Star Chamber were what was known as prerogative courts, set up (perfectly legally) in earlier times by royal authority, but they were not part of Common Law, and in the 1630s came to be seen as increasingly authoritarian and royalist.
