Northeast Passage

A water route along the northern coast of Europe and Asia between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. A goal of navigators since the 1400s, it was first traversed by the Swedish explorer Nils A.E. Nordenskjöld in 1878 to 1880.

Now Russia is playing tough with the stretch of Arctic shipping lanes known as the Northeast Passage by building military bases along its vast northern border.
