Tanzanian politician who led his country to independence from Britain and served as its first president (1964-1985). During his presidency, he successfully promoted East African unity.

(Biography) Julius Kambarage (kæmˈbaːraːɡə). 1922–99, Tanzanian statesman; president (1964–85). He became prime minister of Tanganyika in 1961 and president in 1962, negotiating the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar to form Tanzania (1964)
