In patients with akinetic mutism and possible abulia, for whom oral medication administration is either impossible or contraindicated (ie, due to the potential risk of aspiration pneumonia), atypical antipsychotics, such as IM olanazapine
, have produced a therapeutic response in apathetic patients with NCD.
For example, accidental misuse or younger people tend to metabolize drugs faster than older people or those who smoke the cigarettes metabolize clonazepam and olanazapine
faster than those who do not.
The drugs concerned are haloperidol, chlorpromazine, quetiapine, amisulpiride, risperidone and olanazapine
. The last two can increase the risk of stroke.
