The orographic volcano clouds over
Olympus Mons (e.g., Nix Olympica) and the Tharsis Montes were viewed from 2000 Dec 22 (Ls= 93[degrees]) till Jun 24 (184[degrees]).
The third cake towered as an even-larger three-dimensional model of
Olympus Mons.
The largest volcano in the solar system,
Olympus Mons towers to a height of 21.3 kilometers--nearly 2 1/2 times the height of Mount Everest--and has a base 550 km in diameter that is ringed with cliffs several kilometers high.
He notes that
Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system, lies at 19.3[degrees] north latitude, but this peak has nothing to do with the location of Cydonia.
The seventh image was captured when Edgett and I targeted the MGS camera to look sideward (it normally looks straight down) to get an oblique view of the giant volcano
Olympus Mons (7).
Hodge begins his tour on Mars, crawling up the slopes of the highest volcano in the solar system,
Olympus Mons. Given what we know about the red planet--its low gravity, cold temperatures, negligible atmosphere (compared to Earth), and sheer size of the landform we're climbing--the trip he describes is no short hike.
By far the most photogenic Martian feature is
Olympus Mons. This giant extinct volcano in the Tharsis region towers 26 km high (three times taller than Mount Everest) and spans more than 550 km across its cliff-edged base.
We shall climb the peak of
Olympus Mons, wander amid the billions of ice rocks of Saturn's rings, or stand in silent awe at Tranquility Base and a small plaque that reads "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon."

Olympus Mons and Elysium Mons.
And though robot rovers can stream data from atop Mars'
Olympus Mons, they will never be able to tell an emotionally satisfying story about what it's like to climb it.
