But in so far as Onliness is stylistically different from my poems, and I think it is, it's because I was having such fun playing with Flannery O'Connor and Faulkner and Harry Crews and Jack Matthews and all the people I had read with such admiration over the years.
These qualities were reconfirmed in Onliness (1981), a novel of character and allegorical situation set in Virginia.
