The two leading approaches are to use ions in an electrostatic trap, as Schatz and colleagues have done, or to use atoms in an optical trap, which holds things in place using the pressure of light.
The available microscope port also enables system modification for alternate applications, with potential add-ons, such as optical trap laser tweezers, for high-precision micromanipulation of microscopic particles, or an additional camera for high-resolution imaging.
In practice, a laser beam introduced into the optical path of the microscope and focused through a large numerical aperture objective lens converges to form an optical trap at the focal point for the laser.
