As they report today in an advance online paper in Nature Genetics, Penn scientists and their collaborators sequenced the full genome of the golden orb-weaver spider (Nephila clavipes), a prolific silk-spinner that turns out to produce 28 varieties of silk proteins.
Led by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, a team of scientists conducted the largest-ever genome study of spider silks and identified 28 different varieties of silk protein that are produced by the golden orb-weaver spider (Nephila clavipes).
Live exhibits will include the Goliath bird-eating tarantula, which is big enough to cover a dinner plate and the gold orb-weaver spider which spins a web two metres in diameter.
