In soccer, a free kick on the goal defended only by the goalkeeper, awarded when a defensive player has committed a foul in the penalty area.
1. (Soccer) soccer a free kick at the goal from a point (penalty spot) within the penalty area and 12 yards (about 11 m) from the goal, with only the goalkeeper allowed to defend it: awarded to the attacking team after a foul within the penalty area by a member of the defending team
2. (Rugby) rugby union a kick awarded after a serious foul that can be aimed straight at the goal to score three points
(in soccer) a free kick awarded for an infraction committed by a defensive player in the penalty area.
1. Awarded to the non-offending side for an infringement; the opponents must retire at least 10 yds.
2. Kick awarded for one of nine specific fouls within the penalty area, taken from the penalty spot. All players except the kicker and the goalkeeper must stand outside the penalty area.
