Adam's Bridge, also known as Rama's Bridge or Rama Setu, is a chain of limestone shoals, between Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, India, and Mannar Island, off the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka.
The government in 2007 filed the affidavit as it defends its plan to build a canal through a bridge-like stretch of sandbanks and rocks between the Indian coast and Sri Lanka-a formation variously known as Adam's Bridge and Ram Sethu, or Rama's Bridge.
Many claim dredging the 167km channel would damage what they call Rama's Bridge, a chain of shoals and reefs between India and Sri Lanka.
