When James Brome travelled through Gloucestershire, the majority of the apple trees that he saw bore just a single variety: Redstreak. Discovered in France by John, Viscount Scudamore during the reign of Charles I and planted around Herefordshire and the neighbouring counties, Redstreak produced a cider as strong and flavourful as Canary wine--a favourite tipple of the age.
