To celebrate this special golden jubilee on Friday to get us in the spirit, walkers dressed in appropriate 1960s hiking gear will make their way from Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey
A good place to start is the 2.5 mile section from the welcoming market town of Helmsley to the stately ruins of Rievaulx Abbey
, sited in the elbow of an enchanting river valley.
English Heritage also oversees the even more incredible ruins of the Cistercian Rievaulx Abbey
just three miles from Helmsley itself.
Historians specializing in the Cistercian order provide background material for the many writings of Aelred, the abbot of Rievaulx Abbey
, the most important Cistercian monastery of 12th-century England.
Wonderful structures, such as Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Rievaulx Abbey
and Durham Cathedral in the North, castles at Rochester, Dover and Richmond in North Yorkshire, were all constructed.
Within walking distance is Rievaulx Abbey
, one of the best preserved medieval monasteries in Britain.
Buildings covered include Rievaulx Abbey
in Yorkshire, the Acropolis, a clapboard house in Rhode Island USA, the Statue of Liberty and St Pancras station.
We then headed towards Hemsley, about 10 miles away, and on to the ruins of another 12th century construction, the Rievaulx Abbey
that was founded by monks and the spot chosen for its remoteness.
We're not quite that energetic, but ramble three miles to Rievaulx Abbey
On the house National Trust properties include Nunnington Hall and Rievaulx Abbey
. Castle Howard (location of Brideshead Revisited) is a fine historic house with extensive grounds.
Survival and Success on Medieval Borders is a valuable addition to the University of Hull's 'Medieval Texts and Cultures of Northern Europe Series' and an admirable companion to Jamroziak's earlier study of Rievaulx Abbey
