The species which were most affected within our study for this region include the American Kestrel, Black-Crowned Night-Heron, Double-Crested Cormorant, Eastern Phoebe, Hermit Thrush, Ruby-Crowned
Kinglet, Savannah Sparrow, Warbling Vireo, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, the Horned Lark, and the Northern Shrike (Tables 3 and 4).
To evaluate potential differences in fitness relative to phenological period, we estimated mass change in 13 species of landbird migrants [Red-eyed Vireo (Vireo olivaceus), Ruby-crowned
Kinglet (Regulus calendula), Hermit Thrush (Catharus guttatus), Veery (Catharus fuscescens), Wood Thrush (Hylocichla mustelina), Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis), Blue-winged Warbler (Vermivora pinus), Nashville Warbler (Vermivara mficapilla), Magnolia Warbler (Setophaga magnolia), Chestnut-sided Warbler (Setophaga pensylvanica), Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapillus), Common Yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas), and White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) ].
For bird watchers of all levels of expertise, there's a lot to see and hear right from the start - Siporin hears a ruby-crowned
kinglet, and a Steller's jay calls out and then flies through the tree canopy above all of us.
But the biggest surprise was a Ruby-crowned
Kinglet in Ireland, a tiny bird that weighs less than half an ounce.
The marauding chickadees, ruby-crowned
kinglets and tufted titmice chattered and whistled as they passed by.
Finally, the Western Pewee Contopus sordidulus, the Berylline Hummingbird Amazilia berillyna, the Solitary Vireo Vireo solitarius, the Hepatic Tanager Piranga flava, the Black-throated Grey Warbler Dendroica nigrescens, the Gray-breasted Jay Aphelocoma ultramarina and the Ruby-crowned
Kinglet Regulus calendula which were mixed and oak woodland birds (Table 3).
Linda's Mother's Day bird--and that's what we always call it now--is really the ruby-crowned
kinglet (Regulus calendula).
"Brown creepers, golden-crowned kinglets and Mexican chickadees, for instance, are frequent flock associates," says Ficken, "and their high-pitched, buzzy mobbing calls are strikingly similar." Bridled titmice and ruby-crowned
kinglets give mobbing calls that are nearly identical.
Others spotted a ruby-crowned
kinglet, a peregrine falcon, a dunlin, and saw or heard more migratory and resident species.
