A galaxy having a central bulge surrounded by a flattened disk that contains numerous stars but relatively little interstellar matter, creating a conspicuous pattern of spiral arms.

An S0 galaxy's dust ought to be quickly eroded away by impacting ions in the galaxy's "atmosphere." Although dust might be replenished by unexpectedly high rates of star formation, a 2010 study by Yuanyuan Su and colleagues suggests that dusty S0 galaxies simply lack the atmospheres of hot, X-ray-emitting gas found in most S0s.
