There were 470 captures of six small mammal species: Baiomys taylori (n = 191),
Sigmodon hispidus (n = 159), Peromyscus maniculatus (n = 72), Reithrodontomys fulvescens (n = 41), Chaetodipus hispidus (n = 3) and Mus musculus (n = 4).
This disease was first identified in Central America (Tesh et al., 1973), from
Sigmodon hispidus Say and Ord, 1835 (Rodentia: Cricethidae), and later from Orizomys nigripes Olfers, 1818 and Orizomys ratticeps Hensel, 1873 in southern Brazil (Graeff-Teixeira et al., 1990).
Most abundant rodent species present in the area are Holochilus sciureus,
Sigmodon alstoni, Zygodontomys brevicauda and Oligoryzomys sp.
Tissue samples of the opossum (Dideiphis virginiana), raccoon (Procyon lotor), hispid cot ton rat (
Sigmodon hispidus), deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), and the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogastor) were examined microscopically for merozoites and/or sarcocysts.
Other cases of HPS outside the ecologic range of P maniculatus have been described and associated with other rodent reservoirs, including the cotton rat (
Sigmodon hispidus)--associated with Black Creek Canal virus identified in south Florida (1); the rice rat (Orysomys palustris)--associated with Bayou virus in Louisiana (2); and the white-footed mouse (P.leucopus)--associated with a closely related variant of SNV in New York (5).
Populations of the cotton rat,
Sigmodon hispidus (Rodentia: Cricetidae), provide a good system to experimentally examine the interplay between resource abundance, social behavior, and population dynamics.

Results showed that rodent assemblages in dense ungrazed grasslands were dominated by species in the family Cricetidae, especially in the genera Baiomys (pygmy mice), Reithrodontomys (harvest mice) and
Sigmodon (cotton rats).
