The valley abounds with wildlife and one can find Markhors and leopards on the mountain slope besides many kinds of birds like the Himalayan Snow Cock and the Monal Pheasant.
According to Blumstein (1995) globally important birds like Snow Partridge (Lerwa lerwa), Himalayan Snow Cock (Tetraogallus himalayensis), Chukar Partridge (Alectoris chukar), Snow Pigeon (Columbia leuconota), Pintail (Anas acuta), Common Teal (Anas crecca) and many others are found in the different areas of Gilgit-Baltistan.The Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP) is the largest Protected Area of Pakistan spanning over 10,000 km2 containing 230 villages within its buffer zone covering more than 7000 km2 (Anonymous, 2007).
Major wildlife include Snow leopard (Uncia uncia), Himalayan lynx (Lynx lynx), wolf (Canus Lupus), jackal (Canus aureus), Common red fox (Vulpes vulpes), Himalayan ibex (Capra ibex sibirica), hare, (Ovis oitolus), Long-tailed or Kashmir marmot (Marmota caudata), snow cock (Tetraogallous himalayensis), and Chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar (Roberts 1997).
Local pine forests are habitations of a variety of birds including Monal Pheasant, Himalayan Snow cock. Wildlife such as Markhoor Deer and Leopard are also found here.
The management of Saiful Maluk and Lalusar National Parks in Kaghan valley is greatly helpful to protect and rehabilitate endangered wild species and their habitat in the dry temperate ecosystem including snow leopard, black bear, marmot, weasel, lynx, leopard, Himalayan snow cock, snow partridge.
In the western Himalayas it preys mostly Himalayan blue sheep, Markhor, ibex and smaller prey consists of marmots, woolly hares and birds such as the snow cock and chukar.
