Yet we are not really offered any new insights into the set-pieces of Palmerston's statecraft: the independence of Belgium, the brinkmanship with Guizot, the Spanish marriages, the Don Pacifico incident, the 'hawks and doves' battle over British entry into the Crimea, the Risorgimento, and the Schleswig-Holstein question, all look much the same as they did before Chambers alighted upon them, and in some cases, he has missed important new work by younger scholars which questions the certitudes of older diplomatic history.
