The styloid process gives origin to stylohyoid, styloglossus and stylopharyngeus muscles and attachment to the stylohyoid and stylomandibular ligaments.
It produces similar symptomatic expression as temporomandibular disorders, impacted teeth, trigeminal and glossopharyngeal neuralgia, stylohyoid ligament calcification, stylomandibular ligament inflammation, tumors, cysts and otitis media.
Along this course it passes over the hypoglossal nerve and below the stylomandibular ligament.
The surrounding supporting ligamentous structures are the temporomandibular, sphenomandibular, and stylomandibular ligaments.
The stylohyoid ligament connects the apex of the styloid process and the lesser horn of the hyoid bone, and the stylomandibular ligament extends from the styloid process to the parotideomasseteric fascia between the mandible and the mastoid process.
