On the wall in the same Cabinet it was combined with works by van Mieris, Rubens, Terborch
(1617-81) and de Wit (1616-89), anchoring Watteau firmly in a Netherlandish tradition.
After a long wait--he had previously deferred to the prince over a commission that finally resulted in The Penny Wedding, finished in 1819--Stafford had only recently obtained The Breakfast Party, 1817 (Figure 2), a modest scene of comfortable middle class life that recalls Terborch
or Metsu and was indicative of Wilkie's wavering interest in portraying peasant life.
Among them are Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals, Jacob van Ruisdael, and Gerard Terborch
The subject had been popular with aspiring Dutchwomen when they commissioned portraits from such painters as Gerard Terborch
, since it advertised that they could write.
Now on view at the Denver Art Museum, the exhibit includes 50 paintings by artists including Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Steen, Gabriel Metsu, Pieter de Hooch, Gerard Terborch
, Nicolaes Maes and Samuel van Hoogstraeten.
