ALGIERS, Jan 27 (KUNA) -- The Algerian town of Timimoun has long beguiled visitors with its crimson oases, where some 10,000 tourists converge on the town every year, drawn to its sandy landscape and historic castles.
Sonatrach aims to increase gas production from the established In Salah project and the commencement of production on the Timimoun and Touat fields.
Timimoun, also known as the Red Oasis, is located 1,300 km southwest of Algiers in the middle of the Gourara region, and holds architectural and cultural treasures accumulated over the centuries.
The company's project to develop the Timimoun and Adrar gas fields, a JV with Cepsa and Total, is to be completed by 2017/18.
Cepsa has eight blocks in 60,000 sq km of the Timimoun Basin.
Seven solar power plants totalling a 53 MW capacity are also underway to cover In Salah, Adrar and Timimoun.
Sonatrach is also developing the Timimoun project in partnership with French group Total, and production will start between now and 2018 with 5 million cubic metres, the report said.
These exports will be fuelled by a steadily growing gas production, with projects such as Menzel Ledjmet Est, Touat, Ain Tsila, Reggane Nord and Timimoun set to come online in the next few years.
