WASHINGTON -- The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and the Joint Industry Coupon Committee (JICC) said last month that implementation of the new GS1 Databar for coupons is on schedule and that it was expected that UPC-A barcodes would start being removed from coupons on January 1.
Adopted by the industry to replace the UPC-A code in 2007, the GS1 Databar is expected to let manufacturers develop more robust coupon offers, including coupon values in any amount up to $999.99.
Retailers and suppliers have six months to completely eliminate the use of the UPC-A code, but retailers were required to adapt their systems to scan the GS1 Databar on January 1.
