Cuydado zagala, no ultrage tu pie, fragrante la flor, que en ella el amor es fuerza que este.
Although there are few outright mistranslations and some very convincing renderings, the adoption without discussion of 'Wideawake' for the name of Roland's horse strikes oddly, especially as less controversial names (such as 'Sorel') are left in the original; the consistent rendering of 'traiz' by 'sold' gives a particularly mercenary slant on Ganelon's dealings with Marsile that is not in the original, and on one occasion implicates Charlemagne as well; in laisse 83 Roland's retort 'Jo fereie que fols' is given as 'A stupid thing to do', which is really in the wrong register, as is 'Don't talk such rubbish' for 'ne dites tel ultrage' in laisse 83; the rendering 'The king undid his armour' for 'ad tendut ses armes' (laisse 204) introduces an anachronism that risks being comic.
