When Fraiman tells us that "[t]he unbecoming of my title is intended to push back against conventional assumptions about becoming and stories of becoming" (ix), she offers us a metaphoric way of understanding her own theoretical technique as well: she traces the aggressive strands of narrative - the becoming of the text - and then identifies the elements of emplotment that subvert and challenge the primary paradigm, as if the text could undo (unbecome) its own achievement.
