Upp·sa·la(ŭp′sə-lə, -sä′-, o͝op′sä′lä)
A city of eastern Sweden north-northwest of Stockholm. Capital of a pre-Christian kingdom in the early Middle Ages, it became an archepiscopal see in 1164 and the coronation place of Swedish monarchs. The University of Uppsala was founded in 1477.
