Taylor, The Power OF: VisiCalc (1981) (advising how to properly use the VisiCalc system and providing practice exercises on the system).
In fact, spreadsheets like VisiCalc, introduced in 1979, and Lotus 1-2-3, introduced in 1983, are credited with launching the success of the Apple II and the IBM PC as serious business machines rather than niche hobbyist tinker toys.
His duties included handling the musicians' finances, which he did with paper and pencil--until he was introduced to an Apple IIe computer, and a spreadsheet program called VisiCalc.
He has financial records in VisiCalc in Apple and PC formats, and both old Mac and new Windows versions of Excel.
The first spreadsheet program, VisiCalc, is released.
Hoff gets the credit for realizing that Intel's manufacturing process (which he did not develop) made it possible to cram enough components on a single chip to produce a complete microprocessor; Hoff's colleague Federico Faggin led the team responsible for the actual layout and design of that microprocessor Alcaly also gives major play to some provocative but highly speculative theories: Tom Wolfe's arguments that "small-town" culture in general, and Grinell College in particular, played a major role in the development of the semiconductor industry and that the development of the Visicalc spreadsheet software in the 1970s was "instrumental in launching the takeover wave of the 1980s.
Spreadsheets were one such driver and the dominance of the PC would not have happened without accountants realising the power that applications such as VisiCalc gave them.
However Visicalc was displaced by a superior product -- Lotus 1-2-3.
Hence, VisiCalc did a poor job of adapting its product to the DOS operating system, allowing Lotus 1-2-3 to dominate; Lotus lagged in adjusting its product to the Macintosh operating system and to Windows, allowing Microsoft Excel to take over.
I know people will argue about which spreadsheet is the best and all that, but the general feeling is that VisiCalc made the Apple system flourish and Lotus 1-2-3 did the same with the IBM PC.
