While Galvani's name is of only historical interest in physics now, Volta discovered the law of electroscopic differences and unlocked the rich source of Voltaic electricity. Certainly this has to be attributed to the fact that he focused his attention on the measurable change of the voltage difference when different metals are in contact.
In fact, the early experiments of Galvani really involved both types of electricity: an "animal" type originating from differential ion transport across membranes in the frog's leg nerve itself, coupled with Voltaic electricity originating from electrochemistry occurring at the metals' interfaces, involving separation of ions and electrons, generating a voltage difference across the metal-solution boundary (the double-layer).
