We present findings on the prevalence and abundance of cyamid ectoparasites (Cyamus ceti) or "whale lice" on bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) harvested for subsistence in the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas from 1973 to 2015.
Each has a distinct pattern of mottled gray-scale markings, the patterns of barnacles growing on (or scraped from) their skin, orange patches created by whale lice, and scars from killer whale teeth raking their flesh and from other deep-sea calamities.
The bumps on a grey whale's skin are small animals called barnacles and whale lice.
