also E·re·van (yĕ′rə-vän′) The capital and largest city of Armenia south of Tbilisi, Georgia. An ancient city founded on the site of a fortress established in the eighth century bc, it was strategically important as a trade center on caravan routes linking Transcaucasia and India after the seventh century ad.
