The launch was conducted at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northwestern Russia by troops of the 14th missile division, which is stationed near the city of Yoshkar Ola in the southern part of central Russia.
Richard Turner, a member of Special Olympics Wrexham, was in the Great Britain team which competed in the Russian Invitational Athletics Meeting in Yoshkar Ola. Competing mainly against athletes from eastern European countries, Richard was in the 4x100m relay team which won gold in 55.48 seconds, and came third in both the 400m (68 seconds) and 1500m (five minutes 22 seconds).
