They are unrelated to the raisinlike Zante currants, made from grapes.
Before the "fresh" movement, they were mostly dried and sold in boxes as Zante currants. In those days, the only place I could find them on their delicate stems was in the fancy produce stands in the Los Angeles Farmers Market, at Third Street and Fairfax Avenue - where I willingly paid a premium for their novelty.
Known as Zante currants, those fruits are actually dried grapes, or raisins.
