Herbaria

A herbarium is a collection of dried and mounted plant specimens. Whole plants collected from the field are spread flat and dried, usually between absorbent sheets in a plant press. They are then mounted on stiff white paper and carefully labeled. Specimens are often poisoned as a precaution against insect attacks. Herbaria are said to be the "dictionaries" of the plant kingdom, containing the reference specimens essential to the proper naming of unknown plants. How are specimens organized? More...

The Day of Two Noons: US and Canada Adopt Standard Time Zones (1883)

Before the adoption of time zones, clocks in the US and Canada were set according to the position of the sun overhead, meaning that time varied according to location. For the rail industry, this presented a logistical nightmare, and so many railroads kept their own time, further complicating matters. Standardization solved everything. He made botanical expeditions to the western US, established Harvard University's botany department, and wrote prodigiously on the subject of plants, producing several classic, still-valued textbooks. In order to claim the Western Sahara for Morocco, more than 300,000 Moroccans marched into the territory, which the Spanish still controlled; Spanish troops left the area by early 1976. More...

Technology Allows Severely Brain-Injured Patient to Communicate

Technological advances are revealing that there is much doctors have yet to learn about the awareness levels of severely brain-injured patients. A Canadian man who was believed to have been in a vegetative state for more than a decade demonstrated this recently, when he communicated to researchers that he was not in any pain. Though he cannot speak or gesture, he can think, and researchers were able to interpret his brain activity. Hopefully, this technology will someday allow uncommunicative, severely brain-damaged patients to relay information that could be used to improve their comfort and quality of life. More...
