Santiago, Chile, Founded (1541)

Santiago is the capital and the largest city of Chile. Just months after it was founded on the banks of the Mapocho River by Spanish conquistadors, the settlement was nearly wiped out by the indigenous Mapuche peoples. Myanmar Union Day (2017)

In the Union of Myanmar, also known as Burma, Union Day commemorates the day in 1947 that Bogyoke Aung San, a Burmese nationalist leader, helped to unify all of Burma. Five days before Union Day, an annual relay of the Union flag begins. A ceremony to mark the start of the relay is held at City Hall. Pope to Step Down at Month's End

For the first time since the Middle Ages, a pope is resigning. Pope Benedict XVI stunned the world on Monday, when he announced that he will step down at the end of this month. In his statement, the 85-year-old pontiff said he no longer possesses the mental and physical strength to fulfill the duties of his office. The last pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII, who relinquished the office in 1415 in an effort to end the Great Schism dividing the Roman Catholic Church. More...
