Three Bambusoideae tribes are recognized, two of which are found in the Neotropics: Bambuseae, which comprise the woody bamboos; and Olyreae, the herbaceous bamboos (Kelchner, 2013; Clark et al., 2015).

Both Prat [60] and Brown [30] recognized that leaves of Bambuseae are distinct from Festucoid and Panicoid leaf types; some genera have silica bodies and other leaf characters of both types.
