Baseline blood flow velocity and oxygenation (SvO2) were lower (−20 percent), and the maximum SvO2 increase (overshoot) was higher (52.6 percent); there was also a marginal increase noted in aortic
pulse wave velocity (3 percent).
The study demonstrated that continuous monitoring using a wrist-worn photoplethysmography digital health device, similar to the optical sensors that monitor heart rate on commercially available fitness trackers, revealed differences in arterial
pulse wave patterns between oHCM patients and those of individuals without oHCM.
Of the 8,412 participants who underwent MRI heart scans and infrared
pulse wave tests, the research showed that moderate and heavy coffee drinkers were most likely to be male, smoke, and consume alcohol regularly.
All participants had MRI heart scans and infrared
pulse wave tests, and the results held true even after factors such as age, weight and smoking status were taken into account.
But the current method for checking arterial stiffness,
pulse wave velocity measurement, isn't widely used by the NHS, as it is time-consuming and cumbersome.
Aortic stiffening was then assessed using a Vicorder device to measure carotidfemoral
pulse wave velocity - the speed at which the arterial pulse propagates through the circulatory system.
Aortic stiffening was then assessed using a Vicorder device to measure carotid-femoral
pulse wave velocity (the speed at which the arterial pulse propagates through the circulatory system).
"It uses state-of-the-art
pulse wave technology to basically plug into a person's central nervous system [and] override the signals that go from its brain to muscles," he said during a presentation at the National Defense Industrial Association's Armament Systems Forum in Indianapolis.
'When your arteries are more stiff, you have higher
pulse wave velocity, which increases your risk of cardiometabolic disease in the future,' said Anas Raed, research resident at the varsity.
Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a reliable indicator of vascular damage and atherosclerosis.
