Soft contact lenses with a UV filter can offer protection to the cornea, limbus, some of the
bulbar conjunctiva and internal ocular structures because of their large diameter, movement with the eye and position on the ocular surface.
In addition, we observed perivascular and endothelial staining within the sclera (5/9 animals) and
bulbar conjunctiva (5/9 animals) and occasionally in new vessels forming at the peripheral cornea (5/9 animals) (Figure 2, panels A-C).
There was involvement of Limbus in 3, limbus and cornea in 5, fornix in 1, medial canthus in 15,
bulbar conjunctiva in 1 animal.
Bulbar conjunctiva, palpebral conjunctiva, and lacrimal gland samples were examined histologically for inflammatory cells and goblet cells using hematoxylin and eosin stain and periodic acid-Schiff slides.
The most common site for conjunctival lesions is the
bulbar conjunctiva (87.5).
Flarex, approved in the United States, is indicated for the treatment of steroid responsive inflammatory conditions of the palpebral and
bulbar conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the eye.
* Conjunctivitis of any form--bacterial, viral, allergic, or toxic--involves injection of both the palpebral and
bulbar conjunctiva.
The pathognomonic corneal epithelial defect staining profile of dry eye is bilateral, symmetric, punctiform and diffuse corneal staining, involving the 6-o'clock position on the cornea and interpalpebral area of the
bulbar conjunctiva. By comparing the fluorescein test staining between the two groups of patients, only conjunctiva stained with fluorescein, mostly pronounced in the interpalpebral rim, was recorded in the interventional therapy group, whereas corneal surface stained with fluorescein, especially the lower part of the cornea, was also recorded in the control group.
The
bulbar conjunctiva and anterior episclera are nourished by vessels from the anterior and long posterior ciliary arteries [18], and the limbal conjunctiva is supplied by superficial arcades of the anterior ciliary vessels [19].
Reports of AK affecting the conjunctiva have been limited to the
bulbar conjunctiva, with none reporting the management of tarsal involvement.
