"They are also found in other parts of the brain, including the
neocortex and hippocampus that are important for higher-order brain functions including learning and memory."
In human, the embryonic patterning affects all brain regions from then forebrain through the spinal column, such that by the end of the embryonic period primitive patterning of sensorimotor regions within the
neocortex is established (Bishop et al., 2000), major compartments within diencephalic and midbrain regions have differentiated (Kiecker & Lumsden, 2004; Nakamura et al., 2005), and the segmental organization of the hindbrain and spinal column have been specified (Gavalas et al., 2003).
From the thalamus, the impulses are transmitted immediately to the amygdala, bypassing the
neocortex or 'thinking brain.' The
neocortex does not have a chance to process the impulses, and the body's responses are triggered by what the amygdala dictates.
Futurist Ray Kurzweil suggests that our
neocortex, the part of brain involved in higher-order brain functions such as sensory perception and cognition, is getting extended to the cloud.

Research has shown that the electrical activity of the
neocortex of the brain changes when we focus our attention.
As well as the amygdala, love involves the
neocortex -- the part of the brain responsible for social cognition.
Evolutionary psychologists can be divided into two broad groups: nativists, who regard the mind as a product of essentially genetically innately specified, domain-specific structures and processes, and empiricists, who consider the mind (specifically the
neocortex), as a 'soft-wired' arrangement of neurons designed by genes and continually sculpted by experience and developmental processes under the influence of ascending neural pathways from the limbic (emotional) brain, which asserts its influence globally in the
neocortex by neuromodulators (the evo-devo theory).
