(German ˈhɛbəl) n (Biography) Christian Friedrich (ˈkrɪstian ˈfriːdrɪç). 1813–63, German dramatist and lyric poet, whose historical works were influenced by Hegel; his major plays are Maria Magdalena (1844), Herodes und Marianne (1850), and the trilogy Die Nibelungen (1862)
