An apparent teratogenic effect was associated with both ionic liquids, with only the offspring of treated mice exhibiting certain uncommon morphological defects, such as craniorachischisis, ectopia cordis, and ablepharia. The present study indicates that two commonly used ionic liquid solvents may have adverse effects on development at relatively high maternal exposures and that increasing the primary carbon chain negatively affects development.
