The UN's terrorist lists, used by the EU, include: the Islamist movement Al-Itihaad Al-Islamiya - considered by the United States as having ties to Al-Qaida - and two of its leaders, Hassan Dahir Aweys, from the Hawiye clan, and Hassan Abdullah Hersi Al-Turki, from the Ogaden clan.
Among the ICU's leaders is one Hassan Dahir Aweys, previously of the Saudi-funded, al Qaida-connected al-Itihaad al-Islamiya terrorist group.
Aweys is a former military commander in al-Itihaad al-Islamiya, a Neo-Salafi group which rose to prominence in the early 1990s before being defeated by pro-US warlords.
