Dains and Hebei were among the first American military men in World War II to be killed by what is today called friendly fire--also known over the years as "fratricide" (the killing of a brother), "amicicide" (the killing of a friend), and "blue on blue" (from the custom of designating friendly forces as blue and the opponent as red in US war games).
