guilt, Lynd distinguishes between personalities based primarily on a "shame axis" from those based primarily on a "guilt axis." Lynd agrees with Erikson that shame is an earlier experience than guilt, and that: shame is doubt, including diffused anxiety, an overall ashamedness, a consciousness of the whole self, a feeling that life is happening to the individual.
