Bile duct ligation (BDL) is the most common surgery-based model that induces biliary fibrosis and cholestatic injury, which is based on the double ligation of the bile duct (79).
Common bile duct ligation is well-known to cause cholestatic injury and periportal biliary fibrosis. To explore the role of EXE in liver fibrosis process, we applied EXE in C[Cl.sub.4] and BDL-induced hepatic fibrosis rat models and investigated its effects on collagen deposition and fibrotic marker expression.

At the end of the different experimental times (weeks 1, 3, 6, and 9), the efficacy of biliary duct obstruction in inducing fibrosis was assessed by the observation of bile duct dilatation and histopathological features specific of biliary fibrosis. The macroscopic analysis demonstrated bile duct dilatation in different intensities regarding the presence of cyst at porta hepatis with a greenish or yellow-whitish fluid.
Major hepatic complications of prolonged obstructive jaundice include cholangitis, coagulation defects, biliary fibrosis and cirrhosis as a result of progressive hepatic damage.
